Exclusions

Specific situations, conditions or causes that your policy explicitly does not cover.

In plain English

Specific situations, conditions or causes that your policy explicitly does not cover.

Every insurance policy has exclusions — reading them is arguably more important than reading what's covered, since they determine exactly when a claim will be denied. Common exclusions include self-inflicted injury, pre-existing conditions during the waiting period, cosmetic procedures, and acts of war.

Exclusions vary meaningfully between insurers and plans even within the same product category, which is why comparing only premium and headline sum insured can be misleading.

Example

A travel policy might exclude injuries sustained while under the influence of alcohol, or while participating in adventure sports not specifically declared and covered as an add-on.
